Truckin’ Along: Davis Tire Continues to Expand

Davis Tire Co. has its origins in a pickup truck. Although it has graduated to a state-of-the-art facility in Rincon, the business is still connected with that type of vehicle as it trucks along in growth.

Owned by Matt and Ryan Davis, the store offers all brands of tires but specializes in Cooper, Nitto, Hercules and Toyo, wheels, oil changes, brakes, and alignments. Matt said they specialize in tires, wheels and lift kits, with custom wheels and suspension lifts comprising much of their business.

The machines they use for balancing and alignment are made by Hunter Engineering, which, according to Matt, are state of the art. The staff of 13 includes Matt, Ryan, and 2 other office staff, with 9 mechanics.

Matt & Co. stay busy, servicing 30 to 50 vehicles a day, and Matt said they strive to turn around the cars they’re servicing every day. They have 25 commercial contracts (fleets) and a client list that includes Amazon, Port Wentworth and Rincon police and the Georgia State Patrol.

Matt’s especially proud of their waiting room—which he said is clean and spotless, a departure from those at most auto shops—and the three women who work up front. “They’re phenomenal,” said Matt, adding that he has a good team.

Matt’s involvement with the automotive world and specifically tires goes back to high school, when Matt worked at a tire store in Springfield. Graduating from Effingham County High School in 2007, he went to college for two years before deciding to return to the automotive field.

With limited financial resources, Matt drove around in his pickup truck with an air compressor and provided roadside service. He did that for five to six years. “I literally worked 24 hours,” Matt said.

Matt eventually saved up enough money to open up a shop in Springfield. He and Ryan married, becoming life and business partners. When they outgrew the space in Springfield, they moved to Rincon almost three years ago and now operate a multi-million dollar business on McCall Road.

“We’ve had the number one shop in Effingham County three years in a row,” said Matt, who has cut back on the mobile service as business has grown. “We have the highest paid techs in the county. We send them off for training and pay for it. We work hard to have a good reputation.”

Matt said his biggest thrill comes when he sees the customer’s reaction after they’ve done a custom job.

“I enjoy dealing with people,” Matt said. “We know most our customers by name. They’re like family. I actually enjoy going to work.”

He’s not the only member of his family who looks forward to the work day.“I enjoy going to work,” Ryan said. “It’s more of a family atmosphere. It’s easygoing. Most employees have been here a while. The new ones quickly became family.”

Ryan said she stays busy and the days go by quickly. She frequently interacts with her husband. “We work really well together,” she said.
