Heather Wright: Finding a Sense of Purpose Through Candle Making

Heather Wright’s popular candle and gift shop is located in charming old town Springfield, GA. She creates her candles in her shop using artisanal methods—hand pouring small batch candles with a blend of soy and coconut wax, while pairing them with the finest wicks to give a clean burning, fragrant experience.

Although they only opened last December, the shop has been so well received that they outgrew their original store and are in the process of moving into a larger space.

“The new studio and the retail space is much larger, enabling us to really expand our product lines, the Men’s Corner and new Kid’s Corner,” says Heather.

In addition to candles, they carry wax melts, wax melt warmers, dough bowls and a new line of bath & body care products such as bath bombs, soaps, body scrubs & body butters.

Inspired by an Injury

Heather’s journey to professional candle making came about due to a medical crisis when she was in her early forties. “I was working out and felt a ‘pop’ in my neck,” she says. “A week later my eye was drooping, and I was getting headaches.” She was told it was just stress. “I wasn’t getting any better, I was referred to a neurologist who ordered an MRI and MRA of my neck and head.”

Heather’s injury created a dissected carotid artery, and they found two very dangerous brain aneurysms. “It was very frightening. I lived with them in my head for two years before they stented the dissection and coiled the two aneurysms. They have shrunk in size, but they are not eliminated.”

Heather says, “It took a while to get past the stress and anxiety of living with this condition. But I have always loved candles, so candle making and the aromatherapy were really therapeutic. Making candles gave me a sense of purpose.”

From San Diego to Springfield

When Covid hit, Heather, her husband Joshua (a disabled combat veteran, who was medically retired from the Army) and family decided to travel throughout the country visiting relatives. They went to Colorado, Michigan, Georgia, and Texas. They fell in love with Georgia and made the decision to relocate.

“We came here, found a cute little house, and I started making candles in my kitchen, which I was giving away as gifts.” Heather originally planned on selling her handmade candles at farmer’s markets, pop up shops etc., but at the urging of her husband, family, and friends they found a retail space in Springfield. In December they opened Wright’s Wicks Candle Co.

The fragrances she uses in her products are extremely special to her and to her customers. The aroma of eucalyptus and spearmint is very therapeutic for Heather, along with lavender and other scents. One of her most popular items is the wooden dough bowls, and her popular fragrances such are Tropical Volcano, Welcome Home, and Tobacco. They make wonderful gifts for teachers, grads, family, friends, or yourself.

Heather says, “It brings me joy to make candles and it brings me joy to share them with others. I hope people love using them as much as I love making them.”
