Anisa Gratham has worked in addiction and recovery since 1990. When she opened her practice in Effingham in 2006, Anisa was the only master addiction therapist to offer resources for drug and alcohol addiction. Today she is happy to say that Effingham county has grown to offer more resource to help those struggling with addiction and mental health.

Anisa has had her share of struggles with addiction. Before becoming a licensed counselor, Anisa struggled with obesity and a food addiction. She had bariatric surgery in 2002, and her experiences motivated her to become a therapist and help others in need. She earned her Bachelor’s degree and her Master’s degree before becoming a certified bariatric educator in 2009.

Anisa works with many forms of addition, including drug addiction, alcohol addiction, trauma and food (sugar) addiction. During COVID, Anisa saw the lost connections and the hard times others were having.

“We as individuals need connection daily,” she says.

So Anisa took to Facebook and started Mindful Moments, a facebook live series that allowed her to connect to friends, family and clients. She wanted to help others struggling to get the connection they needed during this hard time.

Anisa embraces her journey and what led her to today—she is grateful for her experiences and career. May was Mental Health Awareness month and she wants people to be more aware of the normalcy of mental health struggles, the support there is for those struggling and that there is hope when facing mental health crises.

Anisa is a genuine woman who strives to help her patients and strangers as much as she can. The moment you meet Anisa you can see and feel that energy. She cares about each and every one of her clients.
