Tammy Leggett & Donna Horton

Tammy Leggett & Donna Horton

People often say “never go into business with your friends.” However, it can be one of the most exciting, fun, adventurous, challenging, supporting and satisfying things you can do if you have the right partner. Tammy Leggett and Donna Horton are friends first, business partners second and have been enjoying building Hortons General Store together and keeping it running like a well-oiled machine.

Tammy is the face you see when you walk into the store and she manages the day-to-day operations for the store. She is very personable and is great at communicating with all of the customers and vendors. She also maintains the store by keeping the shelves stocked, creating gifts and baskets for the customers. She enjoys interacting with the customers and listening to their stories.

Donna is more behind the scenes, she works full time in Savannah and balances her time between her job and the General Store.

Hortons General Store opened May 18, 2020. Donna’s husband Van operated Hortons Deer Processing and opened up Horton’s Quality Meat in 2015. In 2016, Horton’s Quality Meat closed down to focus on wholesale and retail of Hortons’ Beef Jerky. Donna and Van would travel around on the weekends going to large events promoting the Horton Products.

When COVID shut down large events in 2020, it was a hard blow since large events were where they promoted most of their products. This led to the idea of opening the General Store to help with their retail business and also to help out friends that were affected by COVID.

Friends and fellow festival vendors across Georgia and South Carolina were contacted to see if they were interested in selling their products in the store. The response was overwhelming!

Horton’s General Store is overflowing with local products from Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida. Horton’s fresh sausage is now available everyday in the store. They also carry local and small batch company items such as BBQ sauces, marinades, pickles, jams, jellies, dressings, soups, spices, coffee and more

Gifts are a big part of the store with T-shirts, soaps, jewelry, candles and more. They create gift baskets upon request from items chosen by the customers.

Tammy and Donna also created their own brand that perfectly describes their business, Southern Rooted. This is a lifestyle company “rooted” in faith, family and friendship. Donna is working on many t-shirt designs for Southern Rooted, and they have expanded into selling soaps, candles and coffee with more products to come.

Horton’s is a women-owned small business focused on making their business successful and also helping out other businesses be successful as well. Check them out in Rincon or online at hortonsgeneralstore.com
