August Shearouse, Community Banker

Effingham Market President August Shearouse says, “We know our customers and we appreciate each and every one.”

Born and raised in Effingham County, August has been at the Springfield branch of the Bank of Newington for the last five years. After graduating from Georgia Southern with a bachelor's degree in accounting, August started her career in banking as a teller. “I fell in love with it. It was a trial by fire at the drive thru, but I loved working with the customers.”

Her position as Effingham Market President is similar to a branch manager, “It’s totally hands on every day, I manage the staff and work with customers on their loan and deposit needs.”

She says what makes Bank of Newington special is “knowing and building relationships with our customers. We help people we actually see in our bank. Our decisions are all made locally. Ultimately, this benefits our communities.”

The bank does a lot of construction and real estate lending and if need be, “I will literally pick up and drive twenty minutes to talk to people face to face.”

She wants customers “to remember their experience at the Bank of Newington fondly, not that it was difficult. They may not remember the details, but they will remember we helped them. The bottom line is if they need help, they will get it.”

Being a hometown banker is important to August. “I love the fact that I have been here my entire life. Whenever I go out, I will know someone. If I am at the grocery store, I will stop and talk to folks at least three times. Effingham county still has a true sense of community.” August and her husband Brandon have “always loved the area and couldn't imagine raising our two boys anywhere else.”

Bank of Newington currently has three branches, and they are laying the groundwork for a fourth branch, with an anticipated opening in Rincon in January 2025. “We want you to be here,” says August, “Bank of Newington is built on being a neighborhood bank and community resource.”
